What is an EAN-8 barcode?

EAN-8 is a compact 8-digit barcode for small products where a full EAN-13 won't fit — think cosmetics, confectionery and small packaging.

How to create one

Enter 7 digits and the check digit is added automatically, or enter a full 8-digit code to validate. Non-numeric characters are rejected.

How the check digit works

EAN-8 uses the same modulo-10 checksum family as EAN-13, weighting alternate digits. The results panel shows the payload, the check digit and the full number.

Generating vs registering

EAN-8 numbers are a scarce resource issued by GS1 specifically for items too small for EAN-13. This tool renders a correct image but does not allocate an official number.

Scanning and printing tips

Because EAN-8 is used on tiny packages, print quality matters even more: maximize contrast, keep the quiet zones, and never shrink below the readable minimum.

Limitations

Only eight digits are available, so EAN-8 encodes far fewer products than EAN-13. It is not a replacement for a registered number.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use EAN-8 instead of EAN-13?

Only when the product is too small for EAN-13. EAN-8 numbers are limited and issued specifically for small items.

How many digits do I enter?

Enter 7 digits to auto-calculate the check digit, or a full 8-digit code to validate it.

Does it assign an official number?

No. It creates a scannable image; official EAN-8 numbers come from GS1.
